So lovely Maija. As a teacher, I ALWAYS miss my own children's parent-teacher interviews, because of course they always fall on the same days. So I know what that teacher feels like. I love your sentiment here...helping those lonely little kids feel a wee bit better is so easy and simple yet makes such a big difference.

Even though I'm not working, I have a two year old who is usually not welcome at big sister's class functions so we miss out too and would love to know someone was thinking of my daughter when I couldn't be there. This is a wonderful post!

A couple weeks ago I spent a couple days at my boys' school for their watchdog program (www.fathers.com/watchdogs) and was given free reign of the school. The idea behind this program is to have a male influence in the schools, when normally it's the moms that do all the things like PTO meetings or field trips and such. In those two days, I barely saw my own kids because these children just lit up when I walked in a room. Beyond the message this post so wonderfully sends, these are my boys' friends, and maybe their dads can't make it for this stuff either. Even now, two weeks later, I still get high-fives from these kids whose names I no longer remember. Not only is it a tremendous feeling for me, but seeing what these kids got out of me while I was there makes that feeling exponentially better. And maybe, just maybe, these kids feel a little better that their parent can't always make it. Awesome post.

I struggle to make it to the parties. I am great at parent teacher conferences, but the field trips and parties break me. I did make it to the holiday party and there was lots of crafting. One little boy sat by himself completely overwhelmed by the ornament making. I waited and asked if he wanted a little help. He looked up at me and nodded slowly. My daughter shared me without hesitation and the way I felt afterwards was unforgettable. That little boy helped me feel whole after so many missed events and, hopefully, he felt a little special too.

This is such an important post—for its forgiveness and for its hope. Thank you.

You know, I'm usually that mom who does get to go to all the school activities, so this is a good reminder to look out for everyone. A few weeks ago I couldn't make an event that I thought wasn't a big deal. It turned out to be a big deal (according to my precious child), but one mom kindly took a picture of my daughter and her project and texted it to me. I loved getting that. It meant so much that somebody else cared - enough to want to share with me their day.

We had this happen the other day in our Mother's Day tea. One of the Mothers was unable to make it, so a few of us did all we could to make that little girl feel special. I can't imagine not taking the opportunity to do so. That said, I think some of these activities (like Mothers day tea) shouldn't happen at all. It is difficult to juggle multiple kids (who can't attend or are in a different class doing the same tea) and automatically, someone will not be able to attend or be left out.
