I made my children homemade bread for breakfast this morning and while they were eating I made dinner in the crock pot from whole/organic ingredients.
My daughter’s lunch is filled with homemade oatmeal muffins and mini-meatloaves that I made with love.
She got on the bus without having to run with a school bag that isn’t missing one single thing.
Her hair is brushed and cute-french braided à-la-Pinterest.
I got out the door with the other two children who were dressed, brushed and snuggled this morning without one single meltdown.
I actually remembered my travel mug of home brewed coffee.
We got out the door earlier than most days.
By the sounds of those few sentences I have this working mommy thing down – in fact I own the working mommy gig!
But if you look a little harder here’s what you’ll find:
I woke up at 6am because my alarm went off even though I wanted to throw it across the room in hopes it would stop ringing while cursing the fact that my children insist on sleeping in on Monday mornings but on the weekends they are up by 5:30am!
It is VERY unlikely that my children will eat the dinner I put in the crock pot and I know for a fact my husband won’t. It’s a recipe I wanted to try for me and I’ll likely be whipping up some grilled cheese sandwiches in a hurry tonight when I get home from work. The toddler will of course be clinging to my leg screaming how hungry she is. Just thinking about it is making me consider driving through McDonald’s for Happy Meals before coming home.
I didn’t actually “sample” the mini meatloaves I put in my daughter’s lunch. I also packed a bag of cheerios anticipating that she’ll hate them.
I may have nicely braided her hair this morning but I forgot to brush her teeth!
While my children were offered homemade bread toasted this morning they turned their noses up at it and instead asked for freezer waffles and granola bars. I don’t know why I bothered (except for the excellent arm workout the kneading gives you!)
My youngest daughter went to daycare in the clothes she slept in. Last night she refused to put on pyjamas and instead opted for yoga pants and a comfy shirt. This morning she wasn’t interested in the clothes I picked out for her so it was just easier to let her go in the clothes she slept in. After all, who will ever really know? At least I made sure she had a fresh diaper.
I didn’t wash my daughter’s “daycare nap blanket” this weekend. I forgot. But I folded it nicely and put it in a bag so it looks like I did.
I may have my coffee but I forgot to eat breakfast.
Oh, and I got to work 30 minutes late.
I totally am not rocking the working momma gig. I just look like I am and sometimes you have to fake it ’til you make it!

This is PERFECT. And what we all need to hear from other moms because truly? From the outside looking in we would all see those first few sentences and be completely jealous that you were somehow pulling it all off and the rest of us were not. If we could all just be honest with each other the life of a mom would be much easier.
Oh good. You had me scared and feeling inadequate for a moment there. Although you still get major points for the homemade bread thing.
I get this, Maija. Oh my, do I *ever* get this.
So great! And so close to home…
I loved this!! I am not a workin mama but ooze with jealousy sometimes at the ones that appear to have it so flawlessly together. Thanks for not making me feel bad with my yoga pants and shower-wet- still bun in my hair
I so love this. We do what we can, right. All my days seem this way. Also, I need homemade bread. xo
Thank you! I am a new working mom and can’t seem to get it perfect. Glad to know I never will! Much less pressure!
Um you are rocking it because your kids are happy, healthy and loved
But you could have made this part 1, part 2 is how we fake being the “perfect spouse
HAHA!! I remember those days…wait…I stay at home now and I still have those days. Sigh…parenthood is just hard. Period.
Hey but at least you had coffee.
LOL!!! Oh, so true!! I always had the best lunches when I worked… because it was dinner that my whole family would refuse to eat. The snack bag always returns with my healthy homemade wonders still in it, untouched or just poked at best. At least one kid is usually wearing something they had refused to take off the day before. And while my oldest usually does have some funky pinterest-inspired braid in her hair, the truth is I do it one day and she just doesn’t take it out for the next three
We just add clips! Ah, life is all about the illusions.
Love. Makes me wonder if anyone sees a slice of my life and thinks I have anything together!

Maija,
I kept nodding in agreement and understanding the whole way through your post.
And you made homemade bread! That makes you my hero.
for a second there I thought I was reading June Cleaver’s bio… LOL
I love you even more!
