Posting Pictures of My Kids

There is a whole post here about why and why not – I know.

BugabooI’ve been blogging for two years and not once have I posted a full-face picture of my children online or referred to them by name.  These are the rules my husband and I agreed to when we opened personal facebook pages and by default these are the rules I agreed to abide by when I started blogging and tweeting and facebooking as Maija’s Mommy Moments.

The name thing never really bothered me – I barely call my children by their names anyway since Sugar Plum, Bugaboo and Sweet Pea are their actual names of endearment.

Of course I post well cropped snippets of them and pictures from behind recognizing that this is a compromise we all have to be happy with.

I’m usually okay with this.  I understand the rules and why we implemented them but on days like today I REALLY wish I could post pictures online.

Sweet PeaToday is Sugar Plum’s first dance competition of the season and people she is going to look AMAZING.  Not only do I wish that I could post pictures of her in her amazingly bedazzled costumes I also wish I could post the video of what I know is going to be among her best performances (and I’m not just saying that because it’s her first solo!).

The next month is filled with my eldest daughter on stages and not once will I get to show you how beautiful she is when she performs – how she comes alive as a confident, talented and determined little individual.

I’ll take a million photos (I always do) and just like our super-cute Christmas cards and these amazing a-la-pinterest bookmarks we’re making for Mother’s Day, I’ll just have to tell you about them and cling to the hope that I’ll get at least one good photo of her in her costume that I can share with all of you.

One like this… because it says so much about her, even if you can’t see the pure determination on her face to stretch just a little bit farther.

The Ex-Cop’s Wife

HugWhen my husband left his policing job so we could move across the country for a job opportunity for me I considered the many benefits – no longer living by a shift-work schedule, no longer co-parenting with my nanny or my in-laws and no longer spending weekends, holidays and celebrations on my own with the kids.

I considered our family and how leaving shift-work behind would make us stronger, better and essentially give my children their father back and me, a husband who was home on a regular basis.

What I didn’t consider is that we were also leaving the danger behind.

This is a regular coping strategy for those who love the ones that put their lives in danger every single time they put on a uniform.  We don’t think about the danger – we don’t allow ourselves to – just so we can let the ones we love most in this world walk out the door and go to work.

This week a police officer was stabbed in the throat during a regular traffic stop.

The emotions I felt when I wrote Is Daddy Going to Die? came flooding back.

But my reality has changed since then.

My husband is no longer pulling cars over.

My husband is no longer putting on a uniform that in some cases marks him as a target.

I’m not really sure how I feel because I can still put myself in the position of this officer’s family but I am not really a part of the “cop family” anymore.

I can still picture myself worrying when my husband was late from work and he hadn’t called but not wanting the phone to ring in case it was… I can’t even bring myself to think it.

I know my husband hurts every single time he learns of another officer being injured or killed in the line of duty and I don’t think these feelings will ever go away.  But I do think I expected a greater feeling of relief that we have left this life and the danger behind.

Instead I am trying to figure out what I “am” when these things happen now.

Six months ago my husband was a fellow officer and I was a fellow cop’s-wife.  We were united with an entire community by these titles alone.

Now… I’m not sure what we are but I am sure that my empathy is still strong and my heart still aches at the mere thought of another officer being injured or killed while just doing their job.

I suppose while I’m more than happy to leave the shift-work and the danger behind I am never going to be willing to leave behind the understanding of what loving a police officer really means.

And right now it means that I hurt for anyone who loves and came close to losing an officer who was just doing their job.

Working Mommy Moment: Car Picnic

It’s not uncommon for people to take one look at my life and ask – “how do you do it?”  I usually laugh a little and say something polite and socially appropriate.

But if I am being completely truthful, the answer is I don’t “do it” very well (or at all) on a regular basis and only some days am I lucky enough that it looks like I’m actually rocking this whole working momma gig.

During the week (especially Monday to Friday) there are so many moments that if anyone caught even a glimpse of what was happening the whole notion that I am rocking anything would bring on fits of laughter.

I thought I’d share some of these moments more regularly with all of you.  I hope you’ll share yours with me too.

The work-outside-the-home vs. stay-at-home vs. work-at-home vs. hybrid (did I forget one?) momma debate rages on so the least we can do is leave it behind for a minute and talk about how some of us are simply surviving the day.  Or in this case, just getting out the door so I can get our day started.

This morning I needed to be out the door by 8am (non-negotiable!) to get to work on time for a meeting.  Unfortunately, this was also the day my children decided to sleep past their regular 6am wake-up.

If there’s one thing I hate about the morning routine it’s when I have to wake-up sleeping children – the key ingredient in the recipe for making your morning miserable.  Unfortunately, I have learned this from experience time and time again.

Instead, I got myself ready and lunches made.  When I heard the kids waking as I was finishing my make-up I knew I had two choices:

1.  Immediately tell them we were already late and rush them through their morning routine.  This would mean getting dressed before they went downstairs, no television, cereal instead of waffles and inevitably tears… first theirs then mine.

OR

2.  Greet them with a huge smile, tell them Mommy has a “special surprise” and Tim Hortonsif they hurry up and get dressed with no whining Mommy will drive them through Tim Horton’s for breakfast.  That’s right – bagels, fruit smoothies and timbits in the car for everyone with a large coffee for Mommy.

Needless to say I opted for #2 and we were out the door by 7:30am without one single tear.  It cost me $10 for breakfast but saved me a whole heck of a lot of my sanity.

And that my friends is my Working Mommy Moment that you would have never known.  All you know is that my kids got to school and daycare with full bellies, tear-free, (with a quick baby wipe) clean and ready for the day.

And me… well I got to drink a hot cup of coffee AND got to work early looking like I am totally rocking this working momma gig once again.

What’s your Working Mommy Moment this week?

Santa and the Easter Bunny vs. The Birds and the Bees

I knew this Christmas when Sugar Plum started poking holes in the big jolly elf traveling around the world on a sleigh in one night theory that we were close to having “that” talk.

This weekend she asked if we could have a “very important conversation” about the Easter Bunny then twisted the knife in my heart just a little bit more when she added “about Santa too”.

I’ve answered many of the tough questions – where people go when they die, why we don’t go to church on Sundays and what does divorce mean. But for some reason my mind was blank when I needed to come up with an answer to “is the Easter Bunny real?”

So I left it to my husband.

He was amazing. He talked about traditions and family and the magic of seasons with a tear in his eye the whole time knowing his eldest daughter is getting older.  But he didn’t falter once.

I was silent because he was doing such a good job and my own tears were ready and waiting to flow.

Then we let Sugar Plum lay out the eggs for the Easter egg hunt the next morning.

Egg Hunt

After she was done and we had tucked her into bed I looked at my husband with all the love I’ve ever had for him twinkling in my eyes and I told him he was amazing.

To which he replied, I’m glad because you’ll be equally amazing when you have the birds and the bees talk with her.

So I guess that’s how it will roll in our house – Hubbie breaking the news about the Easter Bunny and Santa and me breaking the news about where babies really come from.

I would wonder who is getting the more difficult task but I’m pretty sure as per usual – it’s me.

Five Interesting Places You’ll Find Mabel’s Labels in Our House

I make no secret of it online or in “real” life – I am madly in love with Mabel’s Labels and have been for the last almost 9 years (gasp!) since becoming a mom for the first time.

I use Mabel’s Labels on all of the regular things like coats, boots, bags, lunch boxes, mittens, hats, shoes, especially dance shoes!

But in an effort not to lose many of the important things and to become more organized Mabel’s Labels can be found all over our house and I thought I’d share some of the interesting ways we use our favourite brand of labels.

Mabel's Labels - Tag MatesVideo Games and DVDs: We take these everywhere with us.  Especially on long car rides.  This means they end up at houses of friends and family and in piles amongst their own kids’ games and movies.  By labeling them with the small Tag Mates I’m never worried about leaving them behind.

Junk BasketsJunk Baskets: It took me almost eight years of motherhood to figure these out but now I’m a convert.  You know all those things your kids bring downstairs to play with and then leave lying around?  Instead of constantly stepping on those little Lego pieces or Barbie shoes I just pick them all up and toss them in the junk baskets on the stairs.  It’s the kids’ job every time they head up the stairs to take their junk baskets with them and put their toys away where they belong.  If the junk baskets get too full I hint at my children that perhaps they have too many toys and it’s time to purge.  Needless to say the junk baskets get emptied at least once a day!  Using the Sticky Labels makes it easy for anyone to tidy-up the family room (even my husband!).

Mabel's Labels - Mom LabelsMommy’s Stuff: Mabel’s Labels have come out with Mom and Dad Packs with some really cute (can you say bacon) icons just in time for Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day.  I have labeled my company issued smart phone (can you imagine trying not to confuse your own phone with everyone else’s tossed on the boardroom table at the regular staff meeting?) and my camera lens cap.  I cannot tell you the number of times I have put that cap down only to have someone return it to me and ask “where did you get that cute little label?”  Another thing I label – all casserole dishes and serving spoons before potlucks and school functions because of course the sticky labels will go through a sink full of dirty dishes, the dishwasher and the wash machine without coming off!

Homework CupsHomework Cups:  I make sure that all three kids have homework cups ready and waiting for the after-school madness.  Of course only Sugar Plum has “real” homework and by having a labeled homework cup I know she has everything she needs (ruler, pencil, eraser, etc…) to do her homework while I am making dinner or cleaning up dinner or dealing with any other part of the after-school/after-work madness.

Mabel's Labels - Boots

Boots: Of course, I know what you’re thinking… this is hardly an “interesting” place to put Mabel’s Labels BUT we’re using the placement of the labels to help the little kids learn how to match the right foot to the right boot.  For example, you can see in the picture I’ve put the labels on the outside wall of the boots so Bugaboo and Sweet Pea know that their boots are on the right feet when the labels are on the outside.  I’ve also put them on the inside wall so the labels “touch” when they put their feet together.

As a bonus and because I love you, I’m going to let you in on my not-so-secret Absolutely Favourite Place to put Mabel’s Labels – in the hands of new moms.  Mabel’s Label’s have become my go-to baby gift.  After all, isn’t that our job as experienced momma’s – to let new moms know about our favourite tips, tricks and products?

If you’ve never ordered Mabel’s Labels what are you waiting for?  If you haven’t checked out their site in a while you really should take a moment to peruse their newest icons.  Especially the Mom and Dad ones since we’ll all be looking for gifts for moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas soon (and they are only $9.50 a pack and available until June 18, 2012).

Happy Labeling!

PS: Think these photos look photo shopped?  They are! First because I’m still not ready to share our children’s names online and second because the Mabel’s Labels website has a really cool feature where you can build your labels exactly the way they will look before you order them (with names, icons, colours and all!).

Disclaimer: I was not paid to write this post.  I was however sent a small token of appreciation from the amazing Mabel ladies after pledging my undying love time and time again and having ordered at least a dozen combo packs and loot bag combos for all the teachers and daycare workers during the holidays throughout my mommy-lifetime.  I’m also headed over there right now credit card in hand because honestly what dad wouldn’t love bacon icon labels :)

A Special Kind of Humiliation

The driver’s license photo.

Just when you think you don’t look that bad someone takes the Worst. Picture. Ever. Of You and you have no choice but to carry it around with you for the next five years.

I had no choice but to get a new license.  If I had been pulled over in my new province I would have the following options:

Police Lightsa)     Lie (no I haven’t been here six months only two…)

b)     Mention my husband is a cop and hope they don’t ticket me out of respect for “the brother/sister-hood” (for the record I have NEVER done this)

c)      Tell the truth (I HATE getting my picture taken) and hope they don’t ticket me.

So I got a license and the picture is B.A.D.

It is so bad that the only answer to the question ‘do I actually look like that’ is YES.

I may just have to go to the gym right this freaking minute.

I want to not be hard on myself (and I have written about not being so concerned about losing weight) but if you’ve read Jen Lancaster’s book “Such a Pretty Fat” you’ll understand when I say that the only thing standing between me and weight loss is me.

Laundry

That and the six gazillion loads of laundry I fold almost every single night… just saying.

A Brand New Big Screen TV (Say it in the Bob Barker Voice)

Bob Barker

Yesterday was my husband’s birthday and on every single one of his birthdays for the last few years I can’t help but think back to his 28th…

We had dropped Sugar Plum off at my in-laws and headed out for dinner.  Likely the Keg or something my husband would have requested.  I was going to wait until we were actually having dinner but I couldn’t hold onto my surprise any longer.

While I sat with a huge grin on my face in the passenger seat my husband was concentrating on the road.

I looked over at him and said “I have a birthday present and a Christmas present for you”.

My husband’s eyes widened and he couldn’t help but glance over with a smile.  “Really?” he asked.

“Really” I said and let his imagination wander.

We went through a few minutes of him asking “what is it” and me saying “guess”.

Finally he said, “Did you buy me a big screen TV?”

I burst out laughing so hard I couldn’t even look at his face but I knew he was serious.

When I had composed myself slightly and instead of waiting for him to pull into the restaurant or at least for a red light I looked at my husband and said “I’m pregnant”.

I was just newly pregnant with Bugaboo.  He was supposed to be born in mid-December which would have made him a fantastic Christmas present for all of us except like all of my children who don’t like to wait for their due dates, he came in November instead.

My husband was shocked to say the least.  We hadn’t been “trying trying” but we hadn’t been “not trying” either.  We had decided over a year before that fateful car ride that we wanted more children but nothing was happening and we weren’t intervening to move the process along.

One day out of no where I was feeling a bit off and I decided to pee on a stick.

I think it made the perfect birthday and almost Christmas present but I will never forget my husband’s face after the pure joy had settled a bit and he realized he wasn’t getting a big screen tv.

Needless to say, my husband really lucked out that year – he became a father for the second time and to a son whom we cherish to this day.  I also gave in and we bought that big screen television after all.

I’m still chuckling to myself about that car ride even today and if you say “Big Screen TV” in the Bob Barker voice I may actually laugh out loud!

Can You Hear the Crickets Chirping?

Cricket

It’s been pretty quiet here lately.  I think it’s because I am still trying to figure out my new life and the timing of when I can sit down and just… write.

It’s not because I have writer’s block.  In fact I have lots of brilliant (if I do say so myself) ideas.  But they all come during the day.  When I’m working.

By the time I get home, get dinner made, clean the kitchen, get the kids in the tub, read stories and then FINALLY get them into bed, I’m too tired to write.  My brain is still on overdrive from the day’s happenings and all I want to do is hang out on the couch and read or watch tv or tweet (after all one has to have her guilty pleasures).

And my husband is home.  Trust me, this isn’t a bad thing.  But this former shift-worker’s wife is used to spending a lot of evenings on her own.  Now my husband is home every single night and if you had my husband home you wouldn’t want to be typing away on the computer either.

You would be snuggling on the couch.

I was writing in the mornings.  Getting up early and writing while sipping coffee and enjoying the quiet.

But my non-scientific research has proven that the earlier I get up, the earlier my sweet Bugaboo gets up and sometimes even my little Sweet Pea.  This morning at 5:58am before I had even turned the coffee pot on, my two youngest bundles of energy bounced down the stairs ready for the day.

Writing is taking a back seat to everything right now both unintentionally and unfortunately.

But I am figuring this new life out and I really do apologize for the crickets.

PS: I’m LOVING my new gig as the Canned Soup Mom at the Yummy Mummy Club so if you’re missing me or if you’re in need of some quick, easy, kid-friendly recipes (or both!) you can always visit me over there.
